Biomass processing

Biomass

Customer: TerraSol Wirtschaftsdünger GmbH, a joint venture of AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG and ODAS Group, Germany
Application: Processing of up to 20 tons of manure per hour for the existing biogas plant
Solution: Use of a BMS 1500 biomass shredder in combination with a solid dosing unit, feeding screw, metal separator, bypass and discharge pumps to the fermenter
Result: Processing of up to 20 t/h solid manure for efficient biogas production

Biomass Shredder BMS processes up to 20 tons of manure per hour

TerraSol Wirtschaftsdünger GmbH, a joint venture between AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG and the ODAS Group, operates a large, state-of-the-art biogas plant. The company has been successfully processing large quantities of solid manure for several years – often more than 500 tonnes a day – and therefore has extensive experience and in-depth expertise in the operation of high-performance grinding, shredding and dosing systems for biogas plants.

For the expansion of the dosing system and the associated digestion system, TerraSol intensively analysed the state of the art and opted for an optimized system consisting of a solids dosing unit, corresponding feed screws, metal separator, bypass, discharge pumps and the Tietjen biomass shredder BMS 1500.

Why TerraSol uses the Biomass Shredder BMS for solid manure processing

The BMS biomass shredder has proved its worth in the newly installed feed system and TerraSol is now particularly impressed by the following features:

  • the high throughput of up to 20 tonnes per hour with low power consumption
  • very reliable operation even in 24/7 use
  • the very good impurity tolerance
  • the good degree of disintegration, which exactly reflects the optimum between energy input and size reduction
  • the very low noise emission of the system
  • very good integration into the overall system

200 tonnes throughput per day – solid manure content of up to 85%

In practice, TerraSol uses the new system primarily to process substrate with up to 85% solid manure for biogas production. The throughput of the Biomass Shredder BMS is around 200 tons per day.

Felix Blömen, Operations Manager at TerraSol, is very satisfied with the result: “What particularly impresses us about the system, consisting of the biomass shredder BMS and dosing unit, is the high throughput of solid manure combined with high reliability and process safety.”

Breadcrumbs are used in the preparation of cutlets, chicken or fish fillets. They come in a wide range of grain sizes. A Tietjen hammer mill is used at one of the largest breadcrumb manufacturers in Germany.

Uganda is among the world’s poorest countries. Inadequate opportunities to process raw materials leads to post-harvest losses. A local processing centre is now used to turn raw matoke bananas into valuable dry products such as flour, porridge or biscuits.

In India, large quantities of crop residue are burned in the fields. The Indian government has created incentives to re-process biomass, such as rice straw, into renewable energy sources. Before being pulped, biomass must first be crushed. Tietjen’s hammer mills ensure that straw can be used to produce energy.
