Wood Hammer Mills

We understand the requirements of the wood industry for our hammer mills and have the right wood mill for every input material and every desired particle size.

Modern Hammer Mills for Wood Grinding

Wood grinding plays a central role in numerous industrial applications – from pellet production and wood flour to energy generation. Hammer mills have established themselves as a particularly flexible and powerful technology.

Different grinding concepts are used depending on the type of wood, moisture content and desired final fineness. Modern hammer mill systems enable both dry and wet grinding with up to 60% moisture content and high process reliability.

Objectives of Wood Grinding with Hammer Mills

The grinding of wood with hammer mills is a proven method for the targeted shredding of a wide variety of wood raw materials. The starting materials include wood chips, wood shavings, sawdust, wood sticks or pellets, which are processed dry or fresh from the forest, depending on the application. The aim is to produce defined particle sizes, for example for

  • drying
  • pelletising
  • the production of wood flour
  • or energy use

Which Hammer Mill for Which Wood

Hammer mills work on the principle of impact crushing. A rotating rotor with freely moving beaters crushes the wood material by impacting it against impact surfaces and screens.

The final grain size is mainly influenced by:

  • The screen perforation (size and shape)
  • The circumferential speed of the rotor
  • The material properties of the wood

Hardwoods such as beech or oak differ significantly in their grinding behaviour from softwoods such as spruce or pine. These differences are already taken into account in the design of the plant.

Dry wood raw materials – high performance and precise grain distribution
For dry wood materials with low residual moisture, depending on the application

  • High-speed hammer mills
  • large-capacity hammer mills

are used

Moist materials – wet hammer mills for reliable operation
Wet hammer mills are used for moist or fresh raw materials, e.g. wood chips with high water content.
Their advantages:

  • Special design to prevent blockages
  • Less cleaning required during operation
  • In many cases, no explosion protection measures are required

Safe and Even Feeding

An essential component of modern wood grinding systems is the uniform and safe feeding of the mill. Feeding devices such as vibration feeders or dosing screws in combination with foreign object separators ensure a constant material flow and at the same time separate foreign objects such as stones or metals. This protects the mill from damage and increases operational safety.

The result: protection of the mill, less downtime and greater operational safety.

Explosion Protection During Wood Grinding – Protective Measures

Since explosive dusts can be generated during the dry grinding of wood, explosion protection plays a central role. Appropriate systems are designed in accordance with ATEX guidelines and equipped with preventive and structural protective measures. These include, among other things

  • Temperature monitoring
  • Spark-free designs
  • Pressure-resistant housings
  • and flameless pressure relief systems.

In addition, preventive fire protection is of great importance. Modern systems are equipped with spark detection and extinguishing systems that detect ignition sources such as sparks or embers at an early stage and automatically combat them. This is how safe wood grinding works.
